Trey Lance Traded to Dallas Cowboys

Trey Lance has just been traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys for a 4th round pick which ends this wild situation between Lance and the 49ers.

Trey Lance was selected 3rd overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 draft in which they made a massive trade, trading 3 first round picks in order to move up in the draft for him. Lance would only play six games while starting two, while sitting for his rookie year. He would then start last season but inevitably get hurt by breaking his foot and missing the remainder of the year; which would then start the controversy.

After getting hurt, Jimmy Garoppolo would become the starter but he too would get hurt and miss the remainder of the year. Then comes Brock Purdy who become the new starter and would finish the rest of the season and playing extremely going 5-0 and winning two playoff games before losing to the Eagles in a game where Brock couldn’t finish due to injury.

Now going into training camp and preseason, it was hard to make the argument that Purdy wasn’t QB1 because how well he played, but with Lance still on the team it would leave him fighting for the backup spot, which he’d then lose the backup job to Sam Darnold. In what became the craziest quarterback situation we’ve possibly ever seen, Trey would then be sent home by the team to “get himself right” which he would later be traded about a day later.

What’s Next?

As for Trey, leaving the 49ers should be good to separate himself from that while situation, but going to the Cowboys isn’t too much of and upgrade from a depth chart standpoint. This could be seen as insurance for Dallas as questions constantly arise about Dak Prescott ability to take the team to a Super Bowl, so if they potentially move on from Dak down the line, Trey could be their answer. As for San Francisco; although losing a lot of draft capital with Lance, I think they’re fine as they feel they’ve found their QB1 in Purdy and could have potentially reached a Super Bowl if it wasn’t for injury.

What do you think about this entire situation and how do you see it working out for Trey Lance?
